Google Jamming
I’ve recently been using StumbleUpon more, and although it’s fun, it’s not as fun as putting interesting strings into Google to see what turns up. For example, using this:
“parent directory ” MP3 -xxx -html -htm -php -shtml -opendivx -md5 -md5sums
and this:
?intitle:index.of? mp3
Brings up all sorts of interesting stuff.
The University of Buffalo’s mouth and throat singing archive is wonderful. Compare and contrast this Tuvan classic (Borbannadir MP3, 454Kb) with some Celtic examples by Audrey Saint-Coeur (Diddlidge, MP3, 769K – shades of The Crazy Frog) or Tim Lyons (Within A Mile Of Dublin, MP3, 660Kb). http://epc.buffalo.edu/sound/mp3/ethno/
Another wonderful find is an audio version of the Bible read in Cantonese. Hear the Book of Revelation (MP3, 1Mb):
“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.”
Yes indeedy – well, that is if you think a couple of thousand years is the time it takes for something to “shortly come to pass.” No matter, since Cantonese sounds lovely. http://www.audiotreasure.com/mp3/Cantonese/27_revelation/
Similarly, Spank’s Version 2 (MP3, 1.3Mb) is great. http://www.unity303.com/mp3/
In the words of John Peel: I’m just glad I’ve lived long enough to hear this stuff. It all obviously raises some copyright questions: by finding this stuff and listening to it, am I committing theft? I believe the clips here are fair use under UK copyright law at least – and I would assume the artists (if not their copyright holders) would be fine with me sharing these clips with you. So have a nice day with Google why dontcha?
