Sony Subverts Your PC, Then Lies About It, Then…
Wow. Sony BMG sure is having a bad, bad November. But this doesn’t really surprise me. Desperate times for music publishers will lead to increasingly desperate measures. It’s all part of the big flip. What did you do in the copyfight, Daddy?
So bad even Microsoft don’t like it…
MS have branded it as spyware… The Register more politely refers to it as a consumer assault weapon…
And here is a handy list of “protected” CDs.
Now they pull back…
The good news – Sony have agreed to exchange/withdraw all of the 2.1 million CDs with their rootkit on. The bad news – they remain committed to releasing all CDs next year with some form of copy restriction measures.
An exchange/withdrawal programme is nice, but what are they going to do to compensate all those who now have non-functioning operating systems? Probably bugger all.
Perhaps this will encourage listeners to ditch the trashy pop and start listening to interesting, non-mainstream music from small labels and distributors.
